Dog Not Eating: Why Your Dog Refuses Food and What to Do

Quick Answer: Watch and Assess

Skipping one meal in an otherwise healthy, alert adult dog is rarely cause for alarm. If a dog refuses food for more than 24-48 hours, or refuses water for more than 12 hours, call your vet.

Dogs can refuse food for many reasons -- from minor stress to serious illness. A healthy adult dog can safely go 24-48 hours without eating. Puppies and small breeds cannot: they risk hypoglycemia within hours.

Most Common Causes

Stress or environmental change (common)

New home, travel, new pet, fireworks, change in routine. Common and usually temporary.

Picky eating or food boredom (common)

Especially common if the dog has been hand-fed, given lots of table scraps, or frequently switched foods.

Dental pain (common)

Broken tooth, gum disease, or mouth sore. Dog may approach the bowl and then walk away, or drop food.

Nausea (common)

From motion sickness, medication, pancreatitis, or other GI issue. Dog may also be licking lips or grass-eating.

Systemic illness (moderate)

Infections, organ disease, cancer. Food refusal alongside lethargy, weight loss, or other symptoms.

Recent vaccination (moderate)

Mild appetite loss for 24-48 hours after vaccines is normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I try different food if my dog stops eating?
Resist the temptation to switch foods immediately -- this can reinforce picky eating. Instead, ensure the food hasn't spoiled, try warming it slightly, and stick to the same food for 24-48 hours before concluding the dog won't eat it.
Why do dogs stop eating in hot weather?
Heat suppresses appetite in dogs just as it does in people. If temperatures are high, your dog may eat less. Offer food during the coolest part of the day.
My senior dog stopped eating. Is this normal?
Decreased appetite can be normal in senior dogs, but it can also indicate dental pain, organ disease, or cancer. Any significant appetite change in a senior dog warrants a vet visit.

Is Your Dog an American Bulldog?

American Bulldogs have breed-specific health vulnerabilities. ABRA-registered dogs from health-tested lines have better documented health histories.
